DIY Bathroom Updates for You

Is your bathroom dark and cluttered? Are you tired of the way your bathroom looks, or how it makes you feel about your home? If so, there are many things you can do to improve the look of your bathroom, without hiring a professional contractor or bathroom remodeler. If you want to love your bathroom, you can make that happen with a few easy DIY updates!

Decide On a Style

Sailboats, or the beach? Gray and white, or seafoam and pink? Before you can start making changes to your bathroom, you'll need to make some decisions about the way it should look. Pick a style and a theme that works for you.

Accessorize

Once you've picked a theme, choose some accessories that fit your theme. You might purchase a sand-filled jar for your beach theme, or an anchor for your sailboat theme. If you're planning to paint your bathroom, choose your paint colors first and the accessories second, to ensure that your accessories will match the room.

Paint the Walls

Painting your bathroom is an easy way to make your space look all-new. The bathroom may be a small room, but painting it can take all day because of all the furnishings and fixtures (toilet, vanity, etc) that can get in the way. Give yourself ample time to get this project done.

When you're buying paint, it's best to buy satin, semi-gloss or glossy paint. These paints are highly resistant to moisture and are less likely to peel, bubble or develop mold because of the high moisture bathroom environment. Read the instructions before applying the paint and don't apply the second or third coats until the coats already on the wall have properly cured.

Clear Clutter

Clutter can easily build up in the bathroom because there's so little storage space. If your bathroom is cluttered, sort through the bottles, soaps and other items to get rid of anything that you no longer need. If you haven't used it in a year or more, get rid of it!

Get Organized

Once you've gotten rid of your clutter, install shelving to organize the items that are left in the bathroom. If you're installing open shelving, use baskets to hide any smaller items that you'll be putting on the shelves. If you're placing towels on your open shelving, be sure they match your bathroom.
